The BCFN Foundation

The Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition Foundation, BCFN, is an independent and multidisciplinary think tank that analyses financial, scientific, social and environmental factors connected to food.

The BCFN research projects are spread among institutions and the civil society. Furthermore they inspire the way of doing business of the Barilla People.

The coexistence of hunger and obesity, food waste, hyper-exploitation of natural resources, but also climate change and the increase of migration phenomena are some of the global topics that BCFN studies and analyses.

Through its analysis and dissemination programmes, BCFN promotes information to provide people all the necessary tools to make informed choices on their diet and linking the nutritional value of food to its environmental impact.

New generations play a key role in the Foundation’s activity: they are the addressees of the BCFN YES! (Young Earth Solutions) research grant, which for years has been rewarding the best research projects in the agri-food sector with a sustainable approach.  The finalists of the contest in recent years have set up the Alumni BCFN international network, which sees them directly involved in the Foundation’s projects and their dissemination worldwide.


 

7TH INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON FOOD AND NUTRITION

On 1 December 2016, the BCFN 7th International Forum was held in Milan; the event has recorded over the years about 160,000 participants and more than 500 speakers from the academic, political, industrial and no-profit world.

That was the occasion to report on the results of important collaboration projects:

  • Food Sustainabilily Index – developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit with BCFN, it is a tool aimed at highlighting global policies and best practices on the main goals of sustainable development on food, climate change, cities, responsible production and consumption, health, gender equality, education and infrastructures.
    This study is made up of a workbook, a white paper, a city monitor, infographics and an interactive digital hub: tools aimed at further analysing the data on the 25 countries and 16 cities object of the research.

  • Food Sustainability Media Award – international award launched in collaboration with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, aimed at giving visibility to stories and contributions linked to the topic of food sustainability in the world of journalism.

  • Right to Food MAP – platform that gathers and favours the dissemination of information on the most significant topics regarding food and nutrition (research, debates, policies, laws and proposals on the subject).
    This tool, developed in collaboration with the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy and the Politecnico di Milano, will provide to all the stakeholders of the agri-food supply chain a periodic report with qualitative and quantitative information to be updated on these current topics of extraordinary importance.


2016 PUBlications

DOUBLE PYRAMID 2016 - A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE DEPENDS ON UsThe Double Pyramid was developed to establish a relation between the impact of food on the health of people and the environment. This model shows how the foods that is recommended to consume more frequently are also those that have a lower environmental impact.
The 2016 report presented an updated Double Pyramid model substantiated by scientific evidence.

In addition to the habitual information, it contains in-depth studies on current topics such as the Paris Climate Change Conference (COP 21) and its consequences on the food system, the birth of new food trends, as well as initiatives promoted locally for a better access to healthy and sustainable food.

The relevant technical document includes the analysis of 1,313 product categories from 410 different sources.

Eating Planet
Nella sua seconda edizione, Eating Planet, raccoglie il lavoro svolto dalla Fondazione BCFN dalle sue origini fino al 2015. Grazie anche al confronto con autorevoli esperti internazionali, la pubblicazione descrive le posizioni e le proposte della Fondazione per sistemi agroalimentare globali più sostenibili.
